AbstractTroyan region is an important plum growing area in Bulgaria, but little is known about the types of Plum pox virus (PPV) strains. Therefore samples were collected from naturally infected plum (Prunus domestica L.) varieties in 2004 in the experimental field of the Research Institute of Mountain Stockbreeding and Agriculture in Troyan (Bulgaria) to characterize PPV strains of this region. A primer-pair targeting the (Cter)NIb-CP-3' UTR region was used to amplify cDNAs from all isolates. The resulting RT-PCR products were cloned, then sequenced and analysed. Based on the amino acid sequence comparison of the RT-PCR amplified part of the CP genes, four isolates could be classified as belonging to PPV-Rec (recombinant isolates), while one isolate belonging to the PPV-D subgroup.
