AbstractThe crops of wheat and barley were significantly damaged by viral infections during the period 2004 - 2005. The manifestation of the symptoms was stronger in North Bulgaria. In some fields in this part of the country the young plants outlined yellow spots with different size and pattern. In the beginning of the winter 2004/5 or in the early spring of 2005 a mass perishing of yellowing plants was observed. Symptoms like these on the cultural plants were remarked on the weeds Avena fatua, Sorghum halepensis and Agropyron repens. The results obtained by ELISA tests of leaf samples from sick plants confirmed as causal agents of the dwarf syndrome Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) and Wheat Dwarf Virus (WDV).
