2 Evaluation of barley for resistance to fungi-transmitted viruses and tolerance to aphid-transmitted viruses as well as generation of basic material with improved resistance Antje Habekuss (Leader) 1992 - 2006 Accessions of the Gatersleben winter barley collection are tested in the greenhouse, in growth chambers and in the field for resistance to BaMMV, BaYMV-1 and -2 and for tolerance to different strains of BYDV. Resistance genetic analyses are carried out to investigate the inheritance of the observed virus resistance/tolerance. By means of conventional cross technique virus resistance should be combined with other important traits (fungi resistance, yield). Barley Barley yellow dwarf virus - SGV

3 Development and use of evaluation methods of tolerance to the leafhopper-transmitted wheat dwarf virus (WDV) in barley, wheat and triticale Antje Habekuss (Leader) 2002 - 2005 The aim of the project is the evaluation of genebank and breeding material of different cereal species for tolerance to the wheat dwarf virus. For this reason, at first, test methods for a reliable tolerance estimation have to be developed. The selected material is the basis for the breeding of cereal varieties with improved virusresistance/-tolerance. Wheat
